Fukier Tenement — the wine house that survived the war

The Fukier Tenement stands between the Old Town Market Square and Piwna Street. Its history dates back to the 15th century, but it is best known from 1810, when it became the property of the merchant Fukier family.

For more than a hundred years, the popular wine bar 'U Fukiera' operated on the ground floor, while barrels of wine were stored in the deep cellars. It was one of the most recognisable places of old Warsaw gastronomy.

In 1944, during the Warsaw Uprising and the deliberate destruction of the city that followed, the tenement was severely damaged. It was rebuilt only in 1947–1953, faithfully restoring its late 18th-century classicist form. Today a wine bar operates here again — and you can still feel the spirit of old Warsaw inside.
