Opis
Sigismund's Column was erected in 1644 at the initiative of King Władysław IV Vasa, as a tribute to his father, Sigismund III, who moved the capital from Kraków to Warsaw.
The design is attributed to Constantino Tencalla, and the sculpture of the king was made by Clemente Molli. The column has been repaired and restored several times; the last major renovation took place after the destruction of 1944.
The original shaft of the column stands today next to the Royal Castle as a historical relic.
