Czempińska Tenement House (Strubicz)

Opis

The tenement at Old Town Market Square 4 is one of the oldest houses on the Barss side. It was built in the mid-15th century and existed before 1467. Its narrow plot ran from the representative frontage of the Market towards today's Brzozowa Street.

In the early 16th century the house was extended deeper into the plot; by the end of the century the rear wing crossed the line of the former city walls. Around 1604 it was rebuilt again and repeatedly altered after the 1607 fire. In the first half of the 18th century an extra storey and a small rooftop lantern were added.

After 1873 it was internally joined with the neighbouring No. 6 and the facades of both houses were unified — hence the address Rynek Starego Miasta 4/6. In 1928 the facade was decorated with a polychrome by Ludomir Sleńdziński (lost in the war). Rebuilt in 1952–1953 to a design by Stanisław Kamiński; Krystyna Kozłowska and Grzegorz Wdowicki made the sgraffito of the Basilisk and the shoemaker with a mirror. Conserved in 2018.
