Opis
The Barbican was built in 1548 according to the design of John Baptist the Venetian as a semi-circular gatehouse of the Nowomiejska Gate. It was intended to strengthen the medieval city walls and protect the weakest section of the fortifications from the north.
It lost its military significance as early as the 17th century and was gradually surrounded by residential buildings. During World War II it was destroyed, and its current shape is a reconstruction from 1952–1954, based on 17th-century engravings by Erik Dahlbergh.
Today, it is one of the most recognizable landmarks of the Old Town and a popular meeting place for street musicians and painters.
