Maria Skłodowska-Curie (1867–1934) was born in a tenement house at ul. Freta 16 in the New Town (Nowe Miasto). She was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and remains the only one to have won it in two different scientific fields (Physics 1903, Chemistry 1911).

Today, the family home houses the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Museum, featuring memorabilia, documents, and a reconstruction of her laboratory.
