Opis
Jan Zachwatowicz (1900–1983) was an architect, architectural historian, and professor at the Warsaw University of Technology. As the General Conservator of Monuments from 1945, he spearheaded the reconstruction of the Old Town and other destroyed historical sites across Poland.
He formulated the reconstruction doctrine that restored the urban layout and architecture of the Old Town based on inventories, photographs, and the vedute of Canaletto. This monumental work led to the Warsaw Old Town being inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980.
