Bernardo Bellotto, known as Canaletto

Opis

Bernardo Bellotto (1721–1780), an Italian vedutista painter, became the court painter to King Stanisław August Poniatowski in 1767. He signed his works as "Canaletto," adopting the nickname of his more famous uncle.

He painted a series of over twenty vedute of Warsaw — panoramas and views of streets, squares, and buildings. The precision of these paintings, now displayed in the Canaletto Room at the Royal Castle (Zamek Królewski), proved to be an invaluable resource during the post-war reconstruction of the Old Town.
