Zachęta exclusively presents temporary exhibitions of contemporary Polish and international art. The building from 1900, designed by Stefan Szyller, is an architectural monument in its own right.

President Gabriel Narutowicz was shot by the stairs of Zachęta in 1922 — an event commemorated by a plaque.
